Father of the Bride Speech

Ladies and gentleman; as Father of the Bride, I have the pleasure of making the first speech. But don't worry! The star speakers will be here to entertain you shortly, so I will keep this brief. This will hopefully reduce the chance of you falling asleep on your neighbour's shoulder. I emphasise the word 'hopefully', as there are no guarantees that I haven't sent some of the older contingent off already!

Well firstly I'd like to thank you all for making the effort to be here for Jon and Rebecca's big day. You are here because you are valued and your presence on this special occasion means a lot to them. It means a little less to those paying for it, mind you! I'd also like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to Anne and Chris for the beautiful cake; I'm sure you'll all agree that it looks fantastic.

Now, if someone had told me all those years ago that I would be stood here, having just given away my youngest daughter, I wouldn't have believed them. Indeed, I was a lot shrewder in my younger days - I would have haggled for a better deal! But seriously, I can't quite put into words the pride and happiness that my wife, Kath, and I feel to see Rebecca sat here looking so radiant, content and complete. Complete, because she has been blessed with that rare joy of finding, in Jon, her life partner.

From as far back as I can remember Rebecca was always a happy, outgoing, fun-loving girl; a good student at school and always surrounded by friends. She has taken those qualities with her into adulthood. She is a credit to her mother and I - just as young Millie is a credit to herself and Jon. And Jon? Well now, I have to admit that I was a little unsure of this young man when we first met him at the obligatory 'meet-the-fockers' dinner. I mean, after years of suffering at the hands of a Take That obsessed daughter, I guess I was expecting someone slightly more 'boy next door'. Instead, I was confronted with a guy who had more tattoos on his arms than the whole of the Royal Navy! His distinct lack of hair also made me suspicious, what with him being a hairdresser - it was a bit more like 'demon barber' I thought!

But my initial fears were quickly abated, and as Jon and Rebecca's relationship developed, it was clear to see the love blossoming between them. I soon noticed the same spring in their step that Kath and I had after meeting at the Mecca ballroom back in 1958. And, as it turns out, Rebecca and Jon also met at a dance event; so coupled with the obvious affection that they had for each other, I took this as a good omen. I looked past the tattoos and bad hair and saw before me what we see today - a smashing bloke who makes my Rebecca very, very happy.

Anyway, enough about him! Let me speak just a little more about my girl. Don't groan, I said just a little!

Rebecca, you truly are the most fantastic woman. Ok, so there was that time that we had irate firemen banging on the door after your little hoax call, but such moments of insanity are now in the past, and the real measure of who you are is a woman full of love, laughter, confidence and integrity. I am proud to be your father and proud also to have Jon as a son. And Rebecca, even though I have just given you away, you know that the door is forever open and you will always be at home, with your mother and I, here in our hearts.

So ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and join me in a toast to the bride and groom, my beautiful daughter Rebecca and her lovely husband Jon. Rebecca and Jon!

Bridegroom Speech

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank you all for being here on this very special day. The first day in a new and exciting chapter for Rebecca and I: the first day that I have the honour of introducing this beautiful woman beside me as my wife.

Now part of the reason for me standing here is to thank Rebecca for going against her better judgement and actually making it to the registry office today. But firstly, I would like to thank Norman and Kath, her parents; because without them, there would be no Rebecca, and without Rebecca, there would be no insanely happy me, stood here grinning like an idiot! I would also like to thank my new in-laws for all of their help and support in making this day such a success. It really is appreciated and I feel proud to be part of your family.

When Rebecca and I first met, I cannot deny that I was first attracted to 2 things - her legs! But it was soon obvious that aside from physical beauty, those legs were also carrying a warm, kind, confident and outgoing woman. As you all know, Rebecca's sense of fun, her enthusiasm, her sensitivity and energy, touches everyone that she comes into contact with. Rebecca, you are a truly beautiful person, both inside and out, and I feel doubly blessed to have found you; because not only are you my soul mate and my best friend, but you have also given me our wonderful daughter, Millie, to whom you are a shining example of what a woman should be.

People often wonder how you know when you've met 'the one'. Well all I can tell you is that from the first moment, Rebecca and I 'clicked', like something had just fallen into place. And since then, being with her has felt like the most natural thing in the world. It's funny that we actually got together on a Christmas Eve, because every day since then has felt like Christmas and Rebecca is the best present I could ever have hoped for.

And on the subject of presents and gifts...as you know, instead of the traditional wedding list, we decided, instead, to opt for a voucher scheme to help us towards the cost of our honeymoon. Both my wife and I are very much looking forward to escaping the great British weather and jetting off to sunnier climes. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your contributions, which make this all the more possible. You will be in our thoughts as we lounge around, basking in sunshine and relaxation. Well, maybe for a moment at least! Seriously though, your generosity is hugely appreciated and we promise we will enjoy ourselves and raise a glass in your honour!

I also need to thank my best man, Simon, for his help, friendship and his ability to make me laugh, while feeling eternally grateful that I'm not him! I could tell you many funny stories about Simon, but my personal favourite is probably the time that he got so drunk at a barbecue that he collapsed in a bush outside one of our local pubs. Content to just sleep it off where he had fallen, a passer-by unfortunately mistook him for a corpse and informed the police of his whereabouts. I think the police were relieved when they realised that he wasn't actually dead; but I don't think they quite believed his drunken announcement that he was, in fact, the famous footballer Eric Cantona! But Simon often gets in a muddle with identities - I mean, at my stag night, it seems that he even got my gender wrong and thought we were having a hen night instead. How else could he explain the lads' decision to dress me up in a pink hat, fairy wings and a magic wand?! To be fair though, I can't really place the blame for my embarrassing stag outfit on him, as it was actually Marc who forced it upon me. But it's traditional to blame the best man for everything, so Simon, I hereby hold you fully responsible...for all the fun, laughter and morning-after hangovers we suffered! You might be a bit of a mad man, but as a best man, you've done a great job. So thank you, Simon, for helping everything run so smoothly.

Well, before handing over to Simon, who will surely entertain you far better than I, I would just like to say a few more words of thanks. Our special day has been made more so by the presence of our brilliant ushers, Michael, Scott and Marc - you've done a great job lads, thank you for everything. A big thank you also to our bridesmaids; Louise, Claire, Grace and Millie, for looking after Rebecca today and perhaps, but hopefully not, convincing her to actually go through with it! You look fantastic girls: the perfect complement to my radiant and beautiful bride. So if you would all like to raise your glasses and join me in a toast; ladies and gentlemen, the ushers and bridesmaids!
